Activity Summary

A one day international Symposium on “Current Research in Hydraulic Turbines, CRHT-IV” organized by Turbine Testing Lab, Department of Mechanical Engineering on 7th April 2014 was accomplished efficaciously with huge applaud from all the participants and presenters at CV Raman Auditorium, Kathmandu University. The program was divided into three series sessions with 23 Oral Presentations and 13 Poster Presentations.

The event started at 9:30 am with formal inauguration by Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa, Registrar, Kathmandu University followed by the welcome speech by Dr. Hari Prasad Neopane, HOD, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Kathmandu University. Dr. Neopane welcomed all the presenters and guests in the symposium and highlighted the significance of such program. The welcome speech was followed by program overview Mr. Sailesh Chitrakar, Research Fellow at TTL. He highlighted the facts and features of Turbine Testing Lab and talked about the recent activities, achievements and future plans of the lab. Prof. Bhola Thapa gave an inaugural speech in the program wishing success of the symposium. He also welcomed all the participants and the presenters from different universities with deep gratitude.

After the brief inauguration session, the presentation session was started. A total of 23 presentations were made of which 14 presentations were made by the students from Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology (NTNU), 7 presentations were made by students from Kathmandu University (KU) and 2 presentations were by Masters Student from Korea Maritime University (KMU).

The first session of presentations was chaired by Dr. Hari Prasad Neopane, an expert in Hydraulic Turbine Design and sediment erosion. The session consisted of eight presentations. Presenter Amod Panthi, MS by Research student, Kathmandu University started the session with his presentation on the topic “CFD analysis of Pelton runner”. Giert Aaberque Dahl, master’s student from NTNU, spoke about the sediment erosion in hydraulic machinery discussing the problem caused by sediment erosion in guide vanes. The speech was followed by presentation from Inger Johanne Rasmussen and Ida Bordi Stene from NTNU. They put their idea regarding the design of Francis and Pelton rig at TTL.  Nirmal Acharya, master’s student from KMU, spoke about the cross flow turbines in his topic “Numerical & Experimental Analysis of a Cross- flow Turbine with its Performance Enhancement by CFD code”. Similarly, Niroj Maharjan, researcher at TTL, discussed about the potential use of reversible pump turbine in Nepal in his presentation followed by Ruben Moritz’s presentation on Transient CFD analysis of a high head Francis turbine. The final speaker for the session was Anup K.C., Lecturer from Department of Mechanical Engineering, KU, who presented a part of his masters’ thesis work at KMU on the topic “Performance analysis of 70 kW Francis turbine by CFD”.  A brief question and answer session was conducted at the end of the session in which the audience came up with very interesting questions and made the information sharing more effective.

Session II started after the lunch break and was chaired by Mr. Brijesh Adhikary, HOD of Electrical Engineering Department, Kathmandu University who has a lot of experience in a mini grid design projects. The session started with the presentation of master’s student at NTNU, Magni Svarstad, on the topic “Four quadrant characteristic of a pump turbine. Second session also consisted of ENPE master’s student Supriya Koirala’s presentation on Flow analysis of different Pelton bucket section using PIV technique. Other presentations included “Transient LDA in the draft tube of a high head Francis turbine” by Carl Bergan, NTNU, “CFD simulation and verification with respect to head curves and NPSHr” by Kristoffer Vegdal Tabutiaux, NTNU, “Stability criteria of Centrifugal Pump Turbines” by Rakel Ellignsen, NTNU, “Seasonal imbalance in electricity supply and variation in design flow of hydropower projects” by Juben Bhaukajee, KU and “Design of Francis turbine components from maintenance perspective in sediment laden condition” by Balendra Chhetri, KU.

The third and last session was chaired by Prof. Ramesh Kumar Maskey, Associate Dean (Academic) of School of Engineering, Kathmandu University. He is an esteemed expert in the area of hydropower and microhydro. The session consisted of 8 presentations from KU and NTNU. The last presenter of the day was Martine Wessel and she discussed about design of Pelton test rig. At the end of the session III, Chairperson Prof. Maskey summarized the session and coordinated the question answer session.

A short closing program was organized after the completion of session III. Dr. Hari P. Neopane summarized the major issues discussed during the symposium on behalf of session chairs. He also thanked all the participants for delivering good presentations in limited time. Prof. Bim Prasad Shreshta, Associate Dean (Research) of School of Engineering, KU delivered his closing remarks in the program.

After the completion of the symposium, the students from NTNU and major participants were taken for a short tour of the lab and the university.
